There are some pleasant surprises with the nominees for this year’s Georgia Film Critics Association<\/a> awards, but also some not-so-pleasant snubs. Here are the nominees, what won, and my thoughts as a voting member.<\/p>\n

2022 Georgia Film Critics Association Awards<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n

Best Picture<\/u>
\n“After Yang”<\/i><\/a>
\n“The Banshees of Inisherin”<\/i><\/a>
\n“Decision to Leave”<\/i><\/a>
\n“Everything Everywhere All at Once”<\/i><\/a>– Winner<\/b>
\n“The Fabelmans”<\/i><\/a>
\n“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”<\/i><\/a>
\n“Nope”<\/i><\/a>
\n“RRR”<\/i><\/a>
\n“T\u00e1r”<\/i><\/a>
\n“Top Gun: Maverick”<\/i><\/a>– Runner-Up<\/p>\n

Thoughts: I may not love all of the choices as much as I do the best films, but this is a fantastic group of films that is representative of this year’s excellence in cinema. For the first time, we did Runners-Up for each category, and to say the winner, and runner-up, exemplify this year in film is an understatement.<\/p>\n

Best Director<\/u>
\n“Decision to Leave”<\/i>, Park Chan-Wook
\n“Everything Everywhere All at Once”<\/i>, Daniels (Dan Kwan, Daniel Scheinert)- Winner<\/b>
\n“The Fabelmans”<\/i>, Steven Spielberg- Runner-Up
\n“Nope”<\/i>, Jordan Peele
\n“T\u00e1r”<\/i>, Todd Field<\/p>\n

Thoughts: I’ll be honest, I was maybe expecting “Decision to Leave” to get more “Runner-Up” consideration than it did, but I can’t be mad at either the winners or the runner-up here- they’re my choices, in that order.<\/p>\n

Best Actor<\/u>
\nAustin Butler (“Elvis”<\/i>)
\nColin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”<\/i>)- Winner<\/b>
\nBrendan Fraser (“The Whale”<\/i><\/a>)- Runner-Up
\nPark Hae-il (“Decision to Leave”<\/i>)
\nPaul Mescal (“Aftersun”<\/i><\/a>)<\/p>\n

Thoughts: They are my Top 2, as well. We done good.<\/p>\n

Best Actress<\/u>
\nCate Blanchett (“T\u00e1r”<\/i>)- Runner-Up
\nDanielle Deadwyler (“Till”<\/i>)
\nTang Wei (“Decision to Leave”<\/i>)
\nMichelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”<\/i>)
\nMichelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”<\/i>)- Winner<\/b><\/p>\n

Thoughts: We really loved “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” in case you couldn’t tell. A great group of five women.<\/p>\n

Best Supporting Actor<\/u>
\nBrendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”<\/i>)- Runner-Up
\nBrian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”<\/i><\/a>)
\nJudd Hirsch (“The Fabelmans”<\/i>)
\nBarry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”<\/i>)
\nKe Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”<\/i>)- Winner<\/b><\/p>\n

Thoughts: More love for Ke Huy Quan, whom- as I’ve said- deserves literally everything he has coming to him.<\/p>\n

Best Supporting Actress<\/u>
\nAngela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”<\/i><\/a>)
\nKerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”<\/i>)
\nJamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”<\/i>)
\nStephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”<\/i>)- Winner<\/b>
\nJanelle Mon\u00e1e (“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”<\/i>)- Runner-Up
\nKeke Palmer (“Nope”<\/i>)<\/p>\n

Thoughts: Hsu has, inexplicably, not gotten enough traction this award season. I do wish we’d had someone from “She Said” or “Women Talking” in here, even though I love all of these choices.<\/p>\n

Best Original Screenplay<\/u>
\n“The Banshees of Inisherin”<\/i> (Martin McDonagh)- Runner-Up
\n“Everything Everywhere All at Once”<\/i> (Daniels (Dan Kwan, Daniel Scheinert))- Winner<\/b>
\n“The Fabelmans”<\/i> (Steven Spielberg, Tony Kushner)
\n“Nope”<\/i> (Jordan Peele)
\n“T\u00e1r”<\/i> (Todd Field)<\/p>\n

Thoughts: This is a category of equals here, with “Everything” and “Banshees” winning out.<\/p>\n

Best Adapted Screenplay<\/u>
\n“After Yang\u201d<\/i> (Kogonada)
\n“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”<\/i> (Rian Johnson)- Winner<\/b>
\n“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio”<\/i><\/a> (Guillermo del Toro, Matthew Robbins, Gris Grimly, Patrick McHale)- Runner-Up
\n“She Said”<\/i><\/a> (Rebecca Lenkiewicz)
\n“Women Talking”<\/i><\/a> (Sarah Polley)<\/p>\n

Thoughts: I enjoyed “Glass Onion,” but it was my least favorite of these five. I’m glad “She Said,” “Women Talking” and “After Yang” all got nods here, though.<\/p>\n

Best Cinematography<\/u>
\n“Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths”<\/i><\/a> (Darius Khondji)
\n“The Batman”<\/i><\/a> (Greig Fraser)- Runner-Up
\n“The Fabelmans”<\/i> (Janusz Kaminski)
\n“Nope”<\/i> (Hoyte Van Hoytema)
\n“Top Gun: Maverick”<\/i> (Claudio Miranda)- Winner<\/b><\/p>\n

Thoughts: All fantastic choices, even if “Top Gun” is my least favorite of the five.<\/p>\n

Best Production Design<\/u>
\n“Avatar” The Way of Water\u201d<\/i> (Dylan Cole, Ben Procter, Vanessa Cole)
\n“Babylon”<\/i><\/a> (Florencia Martin, Anthony Carlino)- Winner<\/b>
\n“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”<\/i> (Hannah Beachler, Lisa K. Sessions)
\n“Elvis”<\/i> (Catherine Martin, Karen Murphy, Beverley Dunn)
\n“Everything Everywhere All at Once”<\/i> (Jason Kisvarday, Kelsi Ephraim)- Runner-Up<\/p>\n

Thoughts: I’m fine with “Babylon” winning this one- it’s beautifully-crafted in this respect.<\/p>\n

Best Original Score<\/u>
\n“Babylon”<\/i> (Justin Hurwitz)- Runner-Up
\n“The Batman”<\/i> (Michael Giacchino)- Winner<\/b>
\n“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”<\/i> (Ludwig G\u00f6ransson)

\n“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio”<\/i> (Alexandre Desplat)
\n“Nope”<\/i> (Michael Abels)<\/p>\n

Thoughts: It may not have been long-listed by the Academy, but we loved Giacchino’s score enough to give it the win over “Babylon.”<\/p>\n

Best Original Song<\/u>
\n“Carolina” – Taylor Swift (“Where the Crawdads Sing”<\/i>)
\n“Ciao Papa” – Alexandre Desplat, Roeban Katz, Guillermo del Toro (“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio”<\/i>)
\n“Hold My Hand” – Lady Gaga, BloodPop, Benjamin Rice (“Top Gun: Maverick”<\/i>)- Winner<\/b>
\n“Lift Me Up” – Tems, Rihanna, Ludwig G\u00f6ransson, Ryan Coogler (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”<\/i>)
\n“Naatu Naatu” – M.M. Keeravani, Kaala Bhairava, Rahul Sipligunj (“RRR”<\/i>)- Runner-Up<\/p>\n

Thoughts: This had to have been a close vote. I can’t be that mad about the choice, though, because I do love “Hold My Hand.”<\/p>\n

Best Ensemble<\/u>
\n“The Banshees of Inisherin\u201d<\/i>
\n“Everything Everywhere All at Once”<\/i>– Runner-Up
\n“The Fabelmans”<\/i>
\n“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery<\/i>– Winner<\/b>

Thoughts: I get why “Glass Onion” won, but “Women Talking” should have been the choice.<\/p>\n

Best Foreign Language Film<\/u>
\n“All Quiet on the Western Front”<\/i>
\n“Argentina 1985”<\/i>
\n“Close”<\/i>
\n“Decision to Leave”<\/i>– Runner-Up
\n“RRR”<\/i>– Winner<\/b><\/p>\n

Thoughts: The winner and runner-up both make sense. I would imagine this was a tight vote.<\/p>\n

Best Animated Film<\/u>
\n“Apollo 10 1\/2: A Space Age Childhood”<\/i><\/a>
\n“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio”<\/i>– Winner<\/b>
\n“Marcel the Shell with Shoes On”<\/i><\/a>– Runner-Up
\n“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”<\/i>
\n“Turning Red”<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n

Thoughts: The two best ones at the top. This makes sense in every way.<\/p>\n

Best Documentary Film<\/u>

\n“All the Beauty and the Bloodshed”<\/i>
\n“Descendant”<\/i>– Runner-Up
\n“Fire of Love”<\/i><\/a>– Winner<\/b>

Thoughts: I have some catching up to do here, but it’s hard not to love “Fire of Love.”<\/p>\n

Breakthrough Award<\/u>

Thoughts: I’m just glad LaBelle and Midthunder were nominated.<\/p>\n

\n“Emergency”<\/i> (Carey Williams, K.D. D\u00e1vila)
\n“Glitter Ain’t Gold”<\/i> (short; Christian Nolan Jones)
\n“Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.”<\/i> (Adamma Ebo)

Thoughts: I’m overdue watching “The Menu,” but honestly, as much as I love “Wakanda Forever,” I’m glad a movie like “Till” took the win here. Seek out some of the smaller films, though, especially the two shorts, which were among my favorites of the year.<\/p>\n
