The short film “Low,” which can be viewed on YouTube, is described simply in nine words– “Twilight Zone” thriller. An electrician has an unusual day. That’s what it says on YouTube at least, and indeed there’s truth in advertising, as an electrician (Russ Kingston) goes down to one of the bottom floors of a library to solve a problem when some unusual things happen. Writer-director Jon Salmon uses no dialogue to tell this story; it’s all visuals enhanced with sound effects. It’s a smart and entertaining way to tell the story; we see the electrician get out of calender book and look through the months– with the exception of his birthday, every day is filled up with work. After the strangeness occurs, one gets the impression that our mild-mannered electrician could be looking to make some changes in his life, starting with not allowing work to dominate it for him. It sounds like a good place to start. One just hopes others wouldn’t require such odd occurrences in our own lives to get us to feel the same way. At less than six minutes, “Low” doesn’t get overly complex, but in a way, the ideas and possible interpretations Salmon makes room for can be. That’s the sign of a good filmmaker, and a very good film.
