Sonic Cinema

Sounds, Visions and Insights by Brian Skutle

Octobers had a special place in my musical career for a lot of years. Now, I bring that full-circle.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been surprisingly robust for me, as I was able to focus a lot on Sonic Cinema even when movie theatres shuttered back in March, and film release schedules became barren. In May, I decided to take advantage of this as a composer. I finally completed recording (in MIDI form, natch) a piece I had long held off, and put out a new EP of music in “Classical Cinema”, which is now available on Bandcamp. To promote this, I did a “Virtual Concert” of the EP from my office, and included a couple of other pieces to round out the playlist. While that initial performance is available on my YouTube Composer’s page, the camera ended up eschew, so I will embed the “encore” of the concert I did in July.

I’ll be honest, the idea of continuing the “Virtual Concert” concept as a way to get my music out there for people was an inspiring one, and the first one went so well that, in mid-July, I followed up with another, more ambitious one. One of the albums I have not released, but have wanted to, is one revolving around my more personal compositions, entitled, “‘Five Stages’…and other pieces from the heart”. I will release that album someday, but July’s concert, entitled “Pieces From the Heart,” allowed for some of the pieces to be heard for the first time. You can watch that concert, which includes my first “live” musical performance since 2000, below:

That brings us to October, and even before the July concert, I knew I wanted to do a concert this month, because I’ve been plenty inspired by my moviewatching this month. From 2004-2013, there were several Octobers where my horror movie viewing inspired me musically, and that is where this month’s “Horror Soundscapes” playlist is culled from. The virtual concert will take place on Monday, October 19 at 8pm on Facebook Live, to be uploaded later onto YouTube. Like the previous concerts, it will be playback with video accompaniment, and I hope you come experience it live. You can find the event on Facebook here.
