The Ball (Short)
Zach Lorkiewicz takes fairy tale and nursery rhyme into a wickedly fun direction with “The Ball.” The premise is a simple one- a young woman (Avril Dominguez) awaits her boyfriend to take her to a small town ball; though she appears dolled up in an old-fashioned dress, it’s a contemporary setting. As she waits with baited breathe, an evil presence arrives with hopes of stopping her from going. The story is told entirely through prose in the dialogue of the woman and the spirit, both played by Dominguez. It’s a clever hook for a short fantasy, and it’s very funny in the way Lorkiewicz stages it, working off of the script Michael Coe wrote from his story. Lorkiewicz has a simple an imaginative visual sense to pull this story off, and it’s fun to watch Dominguez sink her teeth into both roles, and deliver the dialogue (and story beats) with ease. This is the type of short film I enjoy seeing every year at DragonCon, and it’s a winner in how it executes its premise.
