Partitioned Heart (Short)
Matt Morris’s “Partitioned Heart” is haunting and quite lovely. It’s simple, but complicated, and doesn’t offer much in the way of answers to questions we might have. It’s about a father and a son- Rob (Travis Mitchell) and Daniel (Malik Uhuru), respectively- who share one, last meaningful moment before Daniel has to go. The catch is…Daniel has already died.
How Morris approaches this idea is part of what’s so interesting about it, and I am not going to spoil that part of it when you can just watch the movie below. The film takes place in a single room as we see Rob deal with the aftermath of Daniel’s death, and I love how Morris has seemingly found an original way to deal with loss even if you may think you’ve seen it before from my first paragraph. Mortality, and what that means, is a big part of why “Partitioned Heart” is so compelling to watch, and Morris makes us feel every, painful moment Rob is going through here. It’s a beautiful approach to the subject.
