All Over Again (Short)
Joseph McGovern hit a sweet spot in my with his lovely short film, “All Over Again.” Creative outlets and inspiration are always going to be a subject I warm to in a film, whether it’s a short film like this, an animated film like “Coco,” something more high-minded like “Amadeus” or something darker like “The Symphony.” Here, McGovern just tells a simple, enjoyable story, and gets his point across succinctly and effectively.
Gregory (Joseph Fuoco) goes to an Open Mic night at a local coffee shop, and he sits and listens as poets and musicians express themselves, all while going home every night, and playing the guitar, and working on a song by himself, as he has flashes of memories from his early life with his wife. He’s wanting to express himself like the people who get up on that stage do; he just needs to find his voice. Maybe he will- I’ll let the film tell that part of the story.
Again, this is such a simple story. The performances are just what they need to be, and the direction is not of particular note, nor is the way McGovern writes this film. And that is perfectly fine, because a story like this doesn’t require needless complications or flashy filmmaking, but just a filmmaker in love with the story he is telling, and music to compliment it, which composer Matthew Amadio certainly provides. “All Over Again” will lift you up, and make you feel inspired to do something you love.
