I have a feeling I will always remember a single line from this short scene, “The fuck is wrong with that broccoli?” It’s the capper to a witty, entertaining short, written by Phoebe Torres and directed by Natasha Straley, wherein four 20-something friends are at a dinner party. Their host is telling them the meal, and it all sounds great…until she brings up the cauliflower. The tone of the guests suddenly gets more anxious, and when their host starts to grill them on their uncertainty about cauliflower, we start to get some pretty awkward responses, almost as if they’re either trying to get out of eating it…or don’t even know what it is. It’s hard to really discuss much in a 2-minute scene, but it’s enjoyable to watch this unfold, to hear the absurd variations on “cauliflower” the guests come up with, and the tag that leads us to believe everybody had their own reasons for behaving the way they do. It’s a short, simple treat, unlike the dish the host is offering her guests.
