“Moonlit Nights” feels less like a proper short film and more like a monologue reel for the actor it features, Russ Kingston. I’ve seen several short films with Kingston in them over the past couple of years, so I know how talented he is already. However, if you haven’t watched shorts such as “Desert Noir,” “Do It” or “The Perfect Planet” with him in them, this would serve as a good introduction to the type of gruff, passionate line-reading you can expect from the actor in his films. Here, he plays “The Guest,” according to the credits, who is recounting a story from his youth when harmless teenage hijinks turned into a deadly moment that would define the rest of his life. The words director Jeff Johanson has him saying are intriguing, and Kingston matches them in his delivery. There’s not a lot left to say about the film, but it’s fun to watch as an example of an actor’s talent.
