Random (Short)
“Random” begins with a man and woman in bed. They are recounting the events of the evening that has just transpired, which are passionate, romantic and started off, for Nancy (played by writer/director Cindy Maples), unexpected. Her husband, Evin (Rusty James), has put together a night to remember for the two of them that starts with dinner, roses and a gift and ends with a night of passion. Is it an anniversary? Is it just a random romantic evening? We don’t find out, but it is a rekindling of their love for one another, nonetheless. In seven minutes, Maples (making her debut behind the camera) has a strong visual idea for the film (realized exceptionally by cinematographers Joe Atkinson and D.P. Bonnell) that accentuates the color red by having flashbacks to the evening in black-and-white and is sexual without being exploitative, and romantic without being horribly corny. The music by Mina Fedora aids with the emotional journey Maples takes us on in a brief, but affecting, frame of time.
