Somewhere Between Here and Now
I almost wasn’t sure I’d be able to review this movie. The DVD didn’t play in my DVD player; thankfully, it worked like a charm in my computer.
A young woman has a backpack with her. She’s just gotten back into town, but is detached from the people she talks to, looking for someone to pick her up at the train station. A young man sees her, and follows her. He starts following her around Brussells.
It’s hard to figure out how this scenario will play out as the two begin to walk together, with Louise (Lucie Debay) going back to Adrian’s place.
What progresses is a curious and rather simple story of two people, at basically the same time emotionally in their lives, who share a trip around the city together.
I didn’t really know what to think of Olivier Boonjing’s film at the start- it’s really hard to see a story develop in this film- but it’s nonetheless intriguing enough to keep watching. The film seems to be a “Before Sunrise”/”Before Sunset”-type exploration of young people making an unexpected connection.
Unfortunately, the film doesn’t seem to have a place to go a lot of the time, especially when an old girlfriend starts to walk with Louise and Adrian (Arieh Worthalter). The film seems less like a cohesive narrative than a series of scenes that are tenuously connected by characters, but not really much else.
I guess above all, the film is about finding where you belong in the world. It’s an important choice to make in everyone’s life. But if you keep wandering, how will you know whether there’s a place where you belong? I could kind of say the same thing about this movie.
