Transience is defined as the following, “Passing with time or is the state of being brief and short-lived.” In Tan See Yun’s short film that has the word as its title, time definitely feels brief and short-lived, but more for its 7-minute running time than the content within it. The impact it will have on viewers, however, can last for much longer, as we watch Tom (Joshua Michael Payne) and George (Timothy J. Cox) go through a pivotal moment in their life together. Not a word is spoken between the mature George and care free Tom as we see each one prepare a meal for the other. Tan See Yun’s decision to not use sound at all during his black-and-white short film threw me for a second- even for a silent film buff, not hearing sound effects during modern day films throws me for a loop- but it makes us ponder the drama unfolding in front of our eyes between these two, and how their body language speaks volumes. It’s a poignant and beautiful story.
