What to Expect When You’re Expecting
I think this movie’s greatest saving graces is…it treats pregnancy seriously, from both the male and female prospective. That doesn’t necessarily make it a good movie, as it hits WAY too many of the cliched rom-com conventions, but there’s a level of honesty in the way it handles its subject that is admirable. Inspired by the best-selling pre-pregnancy guide of the same name, the Atlanta-shot comedy/drama follows several couples through the highs and lows of preparing for parenthood. Personally, Ron Howard’s classic comedy, “Parenthood,” tackles the idea better than anything that came before it, and certainly after it, especially when it comes to large cast comedies like this one. However, “Expecting’s” talented cast– including Chris Rock, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick, Dennis Quaid, Thomas Lennon, Jennifer Lopez, and Matthew Morrison –digs into their thoughtful storylines with enough heart to keep someone like me (who’s largely avoided these type of movies in recent years) interested. That said, that doesn’t mean I’ll remember a lot of it for too long afterwards. At least it was pleasant enough to watch, and didn’t make me want to run out of the theatre, and not look back.
